Baseball: Drovers Prevail In Top 25 Clash With Pilots

The #3 ranked USAO Drovers (14-1, 3-0 SAC) topped the #12 ranked Louisiana State University-Shreveport Pilots (15-4, 2-1 RRAC) 6-4 in a NAIA top 25 showcase game. With the win the Drovers win streak now moves to 12 games in a row.

The Drovers would get a go-ahead 2 run home run from Sterling Valera in the top of the 9th to give USAO the 6-4 lead. Valera has now homered in back to back games for the Drovers.

Offensively for the Drovers they would put up 9 hits and be led by Luis Pelayo, who went 2-4 with a single, 2 RBI’s and he also connected on his first home run of the year. Ian Laureano went 2-5 with 2 singles. Sterling Valera went 1-1 with a pinch hit 2 run homerun. Cristian Laboy went 1-2 with a single and two walks. Joey Pena went 1-4 with an RBI single in the 6th inning to tie the game up at 4-4. Brock Henderson went 1-4 with an RBI single in the top of the 2nd inning to open the scoring for either team. Brandon Shumway went 1-4 with a single for USAO.

USAO sent Adam Moraga to the mound and he would throw 7 innings and allow 4 runs on 6 hits for the Drovers. Moraga wrapped up his day with 9 strikeouts. In relief the Drovers called on the lefty Edgar Cuevas and he would shine. Cuevas fired 2 innings, allowing 0 runs on 2 hits and finished it off with 2 strikeouts. He would also get the win in the contest as he now moves to 2-0 on the season.

The Drovers will look to extend their win-streak on Friday, March 6 when they travel to Oklahoma Panhandle State University for a three game set. First game of this conference series is set to start Friday, March 6 at 12:00 PM.
