Baseball: Drovers Clinch Regular-Season Title With Series Sweep

Coming into this series all the USAO Drovers (40-10, 24-3 SAC) had to do was sweep and they would win the Sooner Athletic Conference. The Drovers would do just that as they would sweep the Southwestern Christian Eagles (36-13, 17-10 SAC) in a 3-game series.

Game 1: Drovers Dominate Eagles In Series Opener

In the first game of this series the Drovers had total control as they would beat the Eagles 14-0.

The Drovers sent the left-handed pitcher Colton Williams to the mound who would toss 6 shutout innings, allowing just 5 hits on the night with 8 strikeouts. With the win Williams improves to 13-0 on the season with an ERA of 1.04 and 109 strikeouts. Brock Henderson would throw the final inning for the Drovers and not allow a hit or a run to the Eagles.

The Drover bats got off to a quick start as the would put together a 14 hit game led by P.J. Garcia who would go 4-4 with 3 singles a double and 4 RBI’s on the afternoon. Miguel Lorenzo went 2-4 with 2 singles. Alex Sanchez went 1-4 with a home run (13). Luis Pelayo went 2-4 with 2 singles. Elvin Alamo went 2-5 with a single and a home run (2). Coleton Horner went 1-4 with a single. Ian Laureano went 2-3 with 2 singles.

Game 2: Drovers Capture Series Win Over Eagles:

In game 2 of this series the Drovers beat the Eagles 7-3. With the win the Drovers won the regular season title in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

The Drovers offense collected 9 hits in game 2 led by Luis Pelayo who was 3-3 with 3 singles for the Drovers. Miguel Lorenzo went 2-4 with a single and a double. P.J. Garcia went 1-4 with a single. Brock Henderson went 1-3 with a single and finished the day with 2 RBI’s. Ian Laureano went 1-2 with a home run (2). Coleton Horner went 1-3 with a single.

The Drovers started righty Matt Merrill who went 5.2 innings allowing 3 runs on 4 hits to the Eagles. Merrill walked 5 but countered that with 11 strikeouts for the Drovers. Merrill improves to 10-1 on the season and has a ERA of 1.91. The Drovers used just 1 reliever in this contest in Rudy Gonzalez. Who threw 1.1 innings and allowed 0 runs on just 1 hit to the Eagles.

Game 3: USAO Finishes off Sweep On Senior Day

In the series finale the Drovers defeated the Eagles 7-5. With this win the Drovers cracked the 40 win mark for the 4th straight season.

The Drovers offense put up 12 total hits led by Daniel Lafarga who went 2-4 with a single and a double. Miguel Lorenzo went 2-3 with a single and a home run (8). P.J. Garcia went 2-3 with 2 singles. Luis Pelayo went 2-4 with 2 singles. Ian Laureano went 1-3 with a single. Elvin Alamo went 1-2 with a single. Cristian Laboy went 1-3 with a home run (8). Alex Sanchez went 1-4 with a single.

Jean Muntaner got the start in the series finale as he threw 5.1 innings allowing 5 runs with 3 of them being earned runs. Muntaner finished his day with just 1 walk and 6 strikeouts. With the win he moves to 11-1 on the season for the Drovers. The Drovers gave the ball to Rudy Gonzalez to close out the game. Gonzalez pitched 1.2 innings as he allowed just 2 hits and had 1strikeout on the night.
