Baseball: Drovers Advance To SAC Title After Late Rally

The USAO Drovers and the Texas Wesleyan Rams were notched in a pitcher duel through the first 7 innings. In the first 7 innings, the score was only 3-1 in favor of the Drovers. During the 8th and 9th innings, the Drovers offense exploded for 9 runs, pushing the lead to 12-2. The Drovers would beat the Rams 12-2 and advance to tomorrow championship contest with the Oklahoma City Stars.

The Drovers offense was slowed by starter Stephen Yancey, but they would get to the bullpen. The Drovers would finish with 12 hits, led by Miguel Lorenzo. He would go 3-4 with 2 singles and a home run. Greg Barnette went 3-5 with 2 singles and a home run. P.J. Garcia was 2-6 with a single and a home run. Coleton Horner went 1-4 with a home run. Daniel Lafarga went 1-3 with a double. Henry Rodriguez went 1-5 with a single. Stevie Thompson went 1-3 with a double.

The Drovers got a very impressive start from Senior Stephen Wright, as he would throw 6 innings, allow 1 run on 6 hits. Wright would strikeout 1 and walk just 3. With this win, Wright would improve to 5-1 on the season. The Drovers used two relievers, in Corey Korenic and Angel Reyes. Korenic would throw 1 strong inning, as he would allow 0 runs on 0 hits, and would finish with 1 strikeout. Reyes would throw 2 innings, and would allow 1 run on 2 hits. Reyes would finish the afternoon with an impressive 5 strikeouts.

The Rams will have to sit and await a possible at-large bid to the NAIA Regional Tournament. They will need to be apart of the 45 teams selected, as there will be 9 different brackets that will include 5 teams in each. The brackets will be released on Thursday, May 10 at 3:00 P.M.

The Rams got a good start from Senior Stephen Yancey, as he would throw 6 innings, and he would allow 3 runs on 4 hits. Yancey would finish the afternoon with 6 strikeouts, but would also finish with 5 walks. With this loss, Yancey is now 8-5 on the season. The Rams would use 3 relievers, in Corey Huffstickler, Dusty Cloud, and Parker Robinson. Huffstickler would throw 1 2/3 innings, as he would allow 4 runs on 5 hits. Huffstickler would get out of bases-loaded jam in the 7th, and would just allow 1 run. Cloud was not able to record an out in the contest, as he would give up 2 runs on 1 hit. Robinson would throw 1 1/3 innings, and give up 3 runs on 2 hits.

The Rams offense would be slowed, as they would just collect 8 hits on the afternoon. The Texas Wesleyan offense would be led by, Julio Ibarra. He would go 2-3 with a single and a double. Donnie Lopez would go 2-4 with 2 singles. Michael Davila went 1-4 with a home run. Jacob Barfield went 1-3 with a single. Ted Wisdom went 1-4 with a single. Joseph Barfield would go 1-4 with a single.

Starting pitcher Stephen Yancey said “I think I pitched well today considering how I’ve done in the past against USAO. My offspeed stuff was working well today which kept them off balance I think. I walked too many and hit too many batters. Overall I think I did well. All of us are not sure if we’re going to make a regional or not. We’re preparing ourselves just in case we are. If we do make a regional I think we’ll be a 4 or 5 seed.
