2017 Sooners Basketball Preview

The Sooners are coming off a very rough season, finishing with a 11-20 record. The Sooners are going to be a very young but physical team, led by Trae Young. Young isn’t the only player on this Oklahoma team, they also have Christian James, Khadeem Lattin, Kameron McGusty, Jamuni McNeace, Kristian Doolittle, Rashard Odomes and Jordan Shepard.

Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger has led the Sooners to 4 NCAA tournaments and one final four appearance. Kruger is in his 7th season as the head coach at Oklahoma and has a record of 122-77.  Kruger’s assistant coach is Carlin Hartmen who will be in his 2nd season as a part of this staff.

Last season was a disappointment for most of Oklahoma basketball fans and for the program itself. I assure you great things are coming with this years basketball program. The Sooners will be returning Kameron Mugusty, who was 2nd in points per game last season with 10.9, only behind Jordan Woodard. The Sooners will also return their leader from last season, Khadeem Lattin. Lattin averaged 6.3 rebounds per game last season. The Sooners will also be getting back Kristian Doolittle, who averaged 9.1 points per game and also grabbed 6 rebounds per game.

The Sooners took a pre-season road trip to Australia, where they played 4 games and went 4-0. In the first game they played the New England Select and beat them by the score of 133-91. In that game the Sooners were led by Trae Young, who had 21 points and shot 8-15 from the field. In game 2 the Sooners dominated the Sutherland Sharks, by the score of 129-51. In that game the Sooners were again led by Trae Young, who scored 23 points and shot 9-15 from the floor. In game 3 of this tour the Sooners beat the Sydney Kings by the score of 104-89. Oklahoma was yet again led by Trae Young who scored 21 points and shot 7-17 from the floor. In the last game in the tour the Oklahoma Sooners beat the Cairns Taipens by the score of 110-85. Oklahoma was led by Young, who tallied 24 points, he shot 8-14 from the field.

My prediction is that the Sooners will finish in the top four of the Big 12 conference. The Sooners will also make a great run in the NCAA tournament. The Sooners are a very underrated team and the university of Oklahoma always feeds off of the doubters.

Kristian Doolittle said “The trip overseas was great and to build chemistry during was a great experience for not only myself but for the whole team. Our expectations for this year are just to play our best and compete in every game that we play and improve on things we struggled with last year.
