After the All-Star break is a great time to evaluate each player to see where they are at, what’s working and what could be changed. This is that time of the season when some teams determine it’s a lost season and start looking to make personal changes toward the future.
One important area is the diamond in ruff players. Every team has an underrated player, who could be that missing piece to a contending team. In this story I will focus on who I feel is each teams underrated diamond in the ruff.
National League Central:
Reds: Scooter Gennett- Gennett had a heartbreak at the end of the 2016 season after being waived by the Brewers. He was then picked up by the Reds. This season Gennett is hitting .314 with 17 home runs and 57 RBI’s
Cardinals: Tommy Pham- Pham is a great example of an underrated player. Pham is hitting .303 with 13 home runs and 42 RBI’s. Pham also has a .388 on base percentage.
Pirates: Juan Nicasio- Nicasio is a valuable piece to this bullpen. He has thrown 44.1 innings and has limited opponents to a .230 batting average. Nicasio has also limited the long ball, only giving up 2 on the season.
Brewers: Manny Pina- Pina is having his best season by far, hitting .294 with 6 home runs and 29 RBI’s. Pina is an athletic who is very under-rated in two ways, his ability to swing the bat and his defensive ability.
Cubs: Brian Duensing- Duensing is a great and under-rated reliever, he has thrown 42 innings and given up only 5 home runs. Duensing has an earned run average (ERA) of 2.57 and he has held hitters to a .288 batting average.
National League East:
Mets: T.J. Rivera- Rivera is coming into his 2nd season in the big leagues and is making them count. Rivera is hitting .292 with 5 home runs and 27 RBI’s. Rivera also has a .333 on base percentage.
Nationals: Matt Albers- Albers is having a great season compared to last season. Albers is 5-1 with a 1.78 ERA and has thrown 35.1 innings. Albers is holding hitters to a .168 batting average, which is really low. Albers has a 10.70 strikeouts per 9 innings and a 2.80 walks per 9 innings.
Marlins: Dan Straily- Straily is 7-5 on the season with a 3.49 ERA. Opponents are hitting just .229 off of Straily. Straily has a 8.34 strikeouts per 9 innings and 2.54 walks per 9 innings.
Braves: Tyler Flowers- Flowers is having a decent season, hitting .297 with 8 home run and 33 RBI’s. Flowers has a great on base percentage with .387. Flowers also has a slugging percentage of .447.
Phillies: Daniel Nava- Nava is in his 7th season in the majors. His average just continues to rise. Nava is hitting .303 this season with 3 home runs and 17 RBI’s. He also has a very good on base percentage at .400.
National League West:
Padres: Cory Spangenberg- Spangenberg is having a good season hitting .269 with 8 home runs and 30 RBI’s. Spangenberg has an on base percentage of .314 and a slugging percentage of .403.
Rockies: Kyle Freeland- Freeland has had a good rookie season going 10-7 with a 3.64 ERA. Freeland was 2 outs away from a No-Hitter on July 9th against the WhiteSoxs. Freeland has held opponents to a .263 batting average.
Dodgers: Chris Taylor- Taylor is having a good season, hitting .318 with 12 home runs and 44 RBI’s. Taylor had a rough 2016 season, when he hit just .213 with 1 home run and 7 RBI’s.
Giants: Hunter Strickland- Strickland has had a great season with a 2.45 ERA. Strickland has thrown 36.2 innings this season. Strickland has held batters to a .254 batting average. He has a 9.33 strikeouts per 9 innings and 4.91 walks per 9 innings.
Diamondbacks: Brandon Drury- Drury is having a good season but his stats are down from last year. Last season Drury hit .282 with 16 home runs and 53 RBI’s. This season Drury is hitting .279 with 8 home runs and 42 RBI’s. Drury also has an on base percentage of .330.
American League Central:
Royals: Whit Merrifield- Merrifield has been very consistence for his first 2 seasons in the MLB. Last Season he hit .283 with 11 home runs and 29 RBI’s. This season Merrifield is hitting .288 with 10 home runs and 41 RBI’s. Merrifield also has a slugging percentage of .481.
Twins: Taylor Rodgers- Rodgers has ben important part of this Twins bullpen. Rodgers has thrown 38.2 innings and has a 2.79 ERA. Also Rodgers is 5-2 on the season. Rodgers has a 6.98 strikeouts per 9 innings.
Tigers: Mikie Mahtook- Mahtook has had a good first season in a Tigers uniform. Mahtook is hitting .294 with 6 home runs and 21 RBI’s. Mahtook answered all the questions the Tigers had about a center fielder.
White Sox: Matt Davidson- Davidson has been one of forces for this team. Davidson is hitting .245 with 19 home runs and 44 RBI’s.
Indians: Jose Ramirez- Ramirez isn’t really an under-rated player but you really don’t hear his name much. Ramirez is hitting .321 with 17 home runs and 52 RBI’s. Ramirez also has 21 doubles.
American League East:
Yankees: Adam Warren- Warren is having a great season going 2-2 with a 1.98 ERA. Warren has thrown 41 innings and has 40 strikeouts. Warren has held batters to a .161 batting average.
Rays: Jacob Faria- Faria is a starting pitcher for the Rays. Faria has a 5-1 record with a 2.67 ERA. Opponents are hitting just .222 off of Faria.
Redsoxs: Matt Barnes- Barnes is having a good season, going 5-2 with a 3.12 ERA. Barnes has thrown 49 innings on the season. Barnes also has 10.47 strikeouts per 9 innings this season.
Orioles: Trey Mancini- Mancini is having a great season. He is hitting .301 with 16 home runs and 53 RBI’s. Mancini has an on base percentage of .347.
Blue Jays: Dominic Leone- Leone is having a great season with the Blue Jays going 2-0 with a 2.56 ERA. Leone has thrown 45.2 innings this season.
American League West:
Angels: Bud Norris- Norris is in his 9th season in the MLB. Norris has thrown 40.1 innings this season and has a 3.12 ERA. He also collected 15 saves on the season.
Rangers: Alex Claudio- Claudio is having a season to remember going 2-0 with a 2.42 ERA. He has thrown 52 innings on the season. Claudio has held batters to a .230 batting average.
Astros: Marwin Gonzalez- Gonzalez has done good things here as a Astro. He is very versatile and can play almost anywhere in the field. Gonzalez is hitting .321 with 18 home runs and 60 RBI’s.
Athletics: Daniel Coulombe- Coulombe is one of the solid pieces to the Athletic’s bullpen. Coulombe is 1-1 with a 2.65 ERA and he has held batters to a .234 batting average.
Mariners: Ben Gamel- Gamel is now in his 2nd season in the MLB and he is already brining a big bat to this Mariner’s lineup. Gamel is hitting .324 with 6 home runs and 35 RBI’s.
