Texas Longhorns 2017 Season Preview

Now that we are coming upon the 2017 season, the Texas Longhorns begin a new era with Tom Herman who is replacing Charlie Strong as head coach. The Longhorns are looking to improve on a 5-7 record last season, under coach Charlie Strong.

Offense:

Shane Buechele returns as the quarterback, after throwing for nearly 3,000 yards and 21 touchdowns as a Freshman. The Longhorns will have Chris Warren III and Kyle Porter to help out for the loss of D’Onta Foreman. The wide receivers for the Longhorns will be deep, with Armanti Foremen, Devin Duvernay and Dorian Leonard. The Longhorns will be looking to improve on points scored per game. Last year they scored 32 points per game, which was 46th in the nation.

Defense:

Tom Herman should be excited about this defense, with 10 returning starters. The Longhorns should be one of the most improved defenses in the country. This defense finished 94th in the country in yards allowed per game, but now they gain experience. The linebackers are led by Anthony Wheeler and Malcolm Roach. Look out for these guys to make a big impact for Texas. The Texas defense gave up 32 points per game last season, which was 91st in college football. Another big piece to this defense is Junior Breckyn Hager, who had 13.5 tackles for loss and 6 sacks.

I have Texas finishing at a very respectful 9-3 record. My guess is that the defense will carry this Texas team. In Herman’s 1st season, I can see the Longhorns experiencing some growing pains. Herman hopes to start a new legacy at the University of Texas.
